After School
Enrichment Program
The after School enrichment
program at Dunbar has been going strong since 1989 with classes
in the Spring and Fall, and now being offered on a quarterly
schedule. The classes are taught by both professionals and dedicated
Dunbar parents. The classes have included arts, crafts, dance,
music, sports, technology, performing arts and more.
Gifted and
Talented (GATE):
Sonoma Valley District Gifted and Talented Education program
is offered to qualifying students in fourth and fifth grade.
Students are provided with challenging and rewarding activities
consistent with the student capabilities in a cluster group setting
and in the regular classroom. Teachers or parents may refer students
for GATE testing at the 3rd grade level. The referral process
takes place during October. Our district GATE teacher provides
specialized support to GATE students on a weekly basis.
T.E.A.M.
time
We know that no two children are alike in the way they learn
and grow. Teachers do wonders by teaching to individual learning
styles. We have taken the idea of individualized instruction
to a new level. Beginning the second week of October all educators
and all 1st - 5th grade students will have TEAM time. As we know,
together everyone does achieve more. Classes are designed to
meet the academic needs of students in language arts. Students
will be with their teams for 30 minutes a day. Most classes will
have small class sizes and many will be mixed grades. Students
have been grouped by the following criteria:
· Need for ELD (English
Language Development) instruction
· Most recent performance
on the district Language Arts Multiple Measures results
· Quintile standing on
the previous years SAT 9 in all Language Arts sections.

Outdoor Education

Leadership
Class
Leadership is a group of 4 th and 5 th grade students who are
chosen by our students to represent our students. Under the skillful
advisement of Sandy Lane and Ann Hanford, the Student Council
I meets during their lunch hour to support improvements and enrichments
for our school. All proceeds from our fall fundraiser go into
the student body account and the student council decides how
best to spend the money. During the 2001-2002 school year, the
student council supported the following: Tether Balls, Field
trips, Doodles & Details, Artist in Residence Program, Poets
in the school with Arthur Dawson, and assemblies! They also run
the student store during recess. Keep your eyes on the Family
Bulletin for future Student Council activities.
School
Improvement Program (SIP)
Dunbar School is part of a statewide network participating in
the School Improvement Program. SIP provides a framework for
change through which parents, teachers, and staff can implement
curriculum improvements. This year, we are focusing on Math and
Language Arts instruction and developing intervention programs
for students not yet meeting grade level standards.
